Pinky Girl and Angel Ghost on Lavender Morning, 2021 Oil stick on canvas
34 x 50 inches -
‘HUG’ was influenced by the events of 2020, a year of social distancing from loved ones and friends.
“We were asked to refrain from gathering and adopt a new way of interacting with one another. We lost the physical interactions experienced day to day and perhaps one of the hardest things for me was losing the simple but endearing feel of a hug.” -Handler

The new works, which star Handler's cute, approachable "ghosts" and "girls", explore relationships and interactions-between couples, a UFO abduction, and one's struggles with death or the loss of a loved one.

"I have always used this series of works as a way to cope with death and one's anxieties around this inescapable 'relationship'. The ghosts were born from that anxiety and are an attempt to create a friendly and non-threatening relationship with death.
The works are in a sense not about dying but rather a reminder to live life to the fullest."

The ghost buddies, with their rosy cheeks and cute smiles, distract from the dark themes referenced in his work, giving us a sense of childlike innocence and curiosity. In works such as ‘Screamer Girl and Ghost Friend’ or 'Grim Bee and the Ghost', the figures in the background appear more menacing, but the ghost buddies in the foreground provide a warm and approachable contrast.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Girls and ghosts are recurring characters in Adam Handler's work. Each colorful canvas embodies Handler's whimsical, fantastical imagery and faux-naif art practice, influenced by Medieval and Renaissance art, Folk and Outsider art, and artists such as De Kooning, Dubuffet, and Basquiat among others. His use of saturated colors and playful distortion of form and scale deliberately breaks with tradition and reminds us of our youthful innocence.
Adam Handler, born in Queens, NY in 1986, graduated from SUNY, Purchase College with a major in Art History in 2008. Handler has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including New York, Europe, Africa, Taiwan, and Seoul, South Korea. Recent exhibitions include Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale, NY, Cohle Gallery, Paris, France, Brega Artist Space, Seoul, Korea; Rarity Gallery, Mykonos, Greece; Janet Lehr Fine Art, Bridgehampton, NY; Concordia College: OSilas Gallery, Bronxville, NY; Fred Torres Gallery, NY; Vered Gallery, East Hampton, NY; and The Children's Museum of Westchester, Rye, NY.
